Pantone's colour of the year Classic Blue 19-4052 During these quite stressful and uncertain times, I think this is very much an apt colour to consider using in your decorating scheme. Whether it reminds you of Mediterranean holidays, the vast ocean or a clear sky on a summers day, this rich, timeless blue calms the spirit and offers peace and tranquility. This deep blue can also add drama and richness to any interior. Here's 5 ideas to use this colour in your home or workplace Feature wall Putting colour on a feature wall is one of the most easy and cost effective ways of transforming a room. Don't be nervous about using a dark colour. It doesn't close a room in, but rather, creates a strong visual reference and is far more dramatic than keeping everything light. It can also show off artwork beautifully. Do balance it off though, with soft pastels - pinks and greys work really well. For a warmer, more contemporary look, use a neutral paint for the remaining walls and not white. Farrow and Ball skimming stone will work well and compliment this deep blue. This room set is a perfect example. Notice how the accessories are shown off in colour against the blue wall. Bring some designs into the scheme and different textures. I love the sheen on the glazed pots and the texture of the woven lampshade. It softens the blue at a higher eye level. Furniture By using one piece of furniture such as a sofa or chair, you can bring blue into the scheme to create a 3D contrast. This velvet sofa sits against a light panelled wall and is accessorised by neutral cushions and throw, with a grey undertone, creating the reverse effect to the contrast wall. A sofa is always a big investment but this blue is a classic and will stand the test of time and also little ones and pets due to its rich dark colour! You can also update accessories easily and cheaply to transform the look. Wallpaper I love using wallpaper in my design schemes. It's a great way to freshen up a room lacking a touch of character. If you use it sparingly, it's inexpensive and fairly easy to do if you are a DIY enthusiast. Florals are bang on trend at the moment and the first signs of Spring. For a cool, calm look this Style library paper will introduce the classic blue in a subtle way. Balance with a few solid colour block pieces of furniture such as this upholstered armchair. Painted accent If you are nervous of using blue in any large quantity, you can use this accent colour very sparingly. Here, the back panels of this cabinet have been painted in blue. The dark background colour shows off the accessories on the shelves beautifully. It creates a strong focus in the room against the neutral walls, flooring and sofa without being overbearing and....... if you get bored, it's very easy to change! Tiles This classic blue is going to fit beautifully in your bathroom where the link with water comes to mind. Blue has been used here for decades I can hear you say! Yes, but this deep classic blue, for a more on trend look, is best used with a shaped or metro tile (as in the photo) and twinned with either copper or satin gold. Use as a feature ie behind a white freestanding bath or one wall in a shower cubicle for drama and not as a border. Grout with a stone or light grey colour and not white for a softer finish.
